Nestled in the heart of Texas near the state’s geographical center, Lake Brownwood is a popular destination for boating, fishing, and year-round water recreation. With 7,300 surface acres and a maximum depth of 95 feet, there’s plenty of room for water skiing, jet skiing, fishing, and swimming. Water levels may fluctuate slightly from day to day, but the fun never stops.
Located about 10 miles north of the city of Brownwood and approximately 70 miles southeast of Abilene, Lake Brownwood is also surrounded by a network of small towns—including Byrds, Holder, Grosvenor, Blackwell Crossing, Fry, Thrifty, Buffalo, Liberty, Obregon, Bangs, Bluffview, Early, and Owens. These nearby communities offer charming shops, antique stores, local dining, and seasonal festivals that enhance any visit.
Fishing on Lake Brownwood
Fishing at Lake Brownwood is a favorite pastime, with Texas Parks and Wildlife rating the lake as good to excellent for white and hybrid striped bass. Largemouth bass and catfish fishing is also strong, while crappie, sunfish, and freshwater drum provide additional angling opportunities.

It's also a hotspot for birdwatching and nature photography. Wildlife sightings may include white-tailed deer, ducks, raccoons, armadillos, and squirrels—so don’t forget your camera!
